Rehearsal will be from 6:00-8:30pm, September 7, 14, 21st, at Faith UCC in Iowa City. Message info@thequire.org with questions.

The Quire is pairing up with St. Paul’s United Methodist Church to perform Craig Hella Johnson’s choral oratorio, Considering Matthew Shepard. This musical work tells the tragic story of Matthew Shepard, a young gay man who was brutally murdered in Wyoming in 1998. Using a mix of musical styles to explore the tragedy of his death, the impact on his family and community, and the broader societal issues surrounding homophobia, Considering Matthew Shepard ultimately serves as a powerful call for compassion and acceptance, invoking a myriad of emotions, described as haunting, yet beautiful; passionate, yet sorrowful; afraid, yet hopeful. The piece incorporates personal writings, news reports, and interviews to create a deeply moving and evocative narrative.
Please join us for our performances of Considering Mathew Shepard, directed by Jesse Reed and Michael Sauer, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids on June 28 at 7:00,
and at Voxman Music Hall in Iowa City on June 29 at 4:00.

The Quire was founded in April of 1995 by a group of fourteen singers led by Rev. Rick Yramategui. The group’s first public performance was on June 18, 1995 at the annual Iowa City Pride Talent Show. The event was held at Clapp Recital Hall on the campus of the University of Iowa. One of the pieces performed, Words Like Freedom, has become a signature piece for The Quire in the ensuing years.

The Quire’s membership has grown over the years, and has garnered recognition for excellence and variety in their performances.

The Quire is supported in recovery during the COVID-19 pandemic through a grant through the Iowa Arts Council, a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs. The Quire is grateful for the support for the Arts from the State of Iowa!

The Quire is a nonprofit arts organization that is supported by generous donors, membership dues, and community support. Our mission to serve as a space for LGBTQ folk to come together in song has significant costs, and we are thankful for the support our community has shown over the years.
