April 8, 2008 THE QUIRE PRESENTS “ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE” The Quire, Eastern Iowa’s GLBT Chorus, presents its spring concert, “All the World’s a Stage,” on Sunday, May 18, at 7:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 310 N. Johnson Street, Iowa City. Admission is free; donations are accepted. The Spring 2008 concert is a salute to drama, presenting songs from or about the theater and featuring a blend of pieces from Broadway, movies and popular music. The concert includes works that Quire members will perform when they represent Eastern Iowa at GALA Choruses’ Festival 8, July 12-19, 2008 in Miami. The program offers such Broadway favorites as Stephen Sondheim’s “Send in the Clowns” and “Together Wherever We Go” from Ragtime. Besides show tunes, the program includes an eclectic mix of pieces from movies and popular music such as “Moon River,” “What a Wonderful World” and “I’m Beginning to See the Light.” The tenors and basses of The Quire will perform an arrangement of the Dixie Chicks’ “Cowboy Take Me Away.” Pieces from the classical repertoire are represented as well. The Quire will perform two pieces arranged by the late American composer Irving Fine: Aaron Copland’s “I Bought Me a Cat,” and “The Lobster Quadrille” from Alice in Wonderland. In addition, The Quire will sing three madrigals set to texts by Shakespeare written by American keyboardist and composer Emma Lou Diemer. While many of the program’s offerings are from musicals, some offer instead a look at the many aspects of drama. The sopranos and altos of The Quire will perform “Fame is a Fickle Food,” a setting of the Emily Dickinson poem. Drama of another sort will be explored in David Maddux's "Chorus Sniper,” which provides a humorous view of the group dynamics experienced in a chorus. The Quire, Eastern Iowa's GLBT chorus, is known for producing an incredible sound in a variety of musical styles. The group performs love songs and freedom anthems, classical works and Broadway hits, just-published works and beloved classics. From its first performance over 12 years ago with just 14 singers, it has grown to a chorus of around 40 members drawn from communities across eastern Iowa. The group is co-directed by Marlys Boote and Linda Kroon. For more information, visit www.thequire.org.
